LEGO Community Headlines and Highlights for January 2025
/It’s hard to believe that one twelfth of 2025 is already in the history books. Most of those New Year resolutions are broken or completely forgotten by now. But here at BrickNerd we won’t forget our continuing resolution to bring you quality, Nerdy LEGO news!
Here at BrickNerd, we brought Da Vinci’s ornithopter to life, shared ideas for dealing with builder’s block, and gave some good guidance on how to win an award. We explored the challenge of constrained building with CMF habitats (and what characters should be rebooted for the next CMF) and a completely different challenge of building with elements from LEGO DreamZzz sets without knowing what the original set design was! We looked at the delightfully Nerdy GOATLUG, explored minifugre NPU, and played “what if” by combining Creator 3-in-1 sets. We explored construction techniques for models of the past, watery past and unique challenges building models of the future! We also built new traditions, a GBC module, hinged models, and manga! In fact, we’ve published so many interesting articles in January that we’ve included an interactive calendar of them at the bottom of this post so you can make sure you didn’t miss a thing.
But there are many more fascinating stories to be told from within the LEGO community, so here are some of the best LEGO articles and videos that caught our contributors’ attention throughout the month of January. We applaud the effort that went into each of these features, so click on the headlines or photos to head to each story or video. They are well worth your time!

We can’t wait to see how these will influence children and AFOLs alike!

Jay’s Brick Blog: Batman Brickheadz 8-in-1 PDF Instructions
Jay’s Brick Blog was one of several fan media sites getting news out to the broader LEGO community that LEGO had finally provided PDF instructions for all eight versions of the Batman BrickHeadz. This was yet another instance of LEGO trying to get customers to go digital with the instructions only available on the app. Once again, the digital-only approach was met with significant customer resistance. Community Ambassadors on the LEGO Ambassador Network were instrumental in helping get the PDF versions released.
Who says studying history can’t be interesting? This hour-long documentary on the development of the groundbreaking LEGO Island video gives us a glimpse into the early days of LEGO video games and an appreciation of how far they have progressed. Plus, stay to the credits to see how two BrickNerd contributors added to the project!

LEGO has been making good progress representing individuals with visible physical disabilities in their products. 2025 sees an important next step in this representation journey. The sunflower lanyard has been incorporated into a variety of minifigures and minidolls to represent individuals with autism and other hidden disabilities. We look forward to seeing how the representation will continue in future months and years.

Phoenix Resale: The Chaotic Reality of Running a Video Game Convention
Have you ever dreamed of starting and running an AFOL LEGO convention? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread!). Oops, did I type that editorial out loud? While this video is a few months old, it is still a good one about a video game convention and the types of issues encountered that apply to an AFOL LEGO convention too. Plus, if you watch, you may see two images and charts that BrickNerd put together a while ago!
The Brick Fan: BrickLink 25th Anniversay
Another headline shared by multiple fan media sites is the 25th anniversary of BrickLink. I’m sure even the founder Daniel Jezek couldn’t have imagined what a vital resource the site would become. As a long-time user (who else remembers the original name BrickBay?) there have certainly been many changes over the years. Now that they are owned by LEGO, there is definitely more of a corporate structure to the inner workings of the site. But it’s still all of the individual sellers that make BrickLink so successful!
The Brothers Brick: Bringing the LEGO Endurance to Life
Minifigure photography has long been a popular artistic medium among AFOLs. And The Brothers Brick has made it almost mandatory that for MOCs to be featured, they must be well photographed. Combining this with a terrific LEGO set and a fascinating history story, resulted in an amazing photo collection.
Tips & Bricks: Castle Ruin Techniques
This one is for all you castle builders out there! From long abandoned fortresses to battle-damaged walls, the most important part of creating realistic ruins in general is implying what used to be there. Picture the entire castle or building and take chunks out in an asymmetrical way so it doesn’t look too ordered—nature and battle are not ordered, after all.
Tips & Bricks: Using LEGO Stickers
Don’t get stuck on imperfect sticker application with these techniques. Learn more about LEGO stickers and how to perfect your sticker placement skills. It is never to late to get stuck!
