Dilbert

Back when the daily arrival of a newspaper was commonplace, the comics section was one of the most popular. Headline, sports, funny-pages. That’s when people would actually start reading. And in 1989, Dilbert and the megalomaniacal Dogbert arrived on the scene. The sarcasm surrounding office politics, micromanagement, and new technology really struck a chord. As did these guys when I saw them, by builder grubaluk. I wonder what kind of scheme Dogbert is hatching today?

Voltron: Defender of the Universe!

Voltron: Defender of the Universe!

So, I bought Voltron!  My son and I put him together the other night.  Took us about three hours; we both built an arm and a leg, then I 'supervised' the Black lion.  I've been driving my wife crazy referring to him by some of his lesser known titles, like Voltron: Defender of the Coffee Machine, and Voltron: Defender of the Dining Room Table.  You get the idea...

Bentley Blower

I won't bother to summarize Bricksonwheels excellent history of the famous Bentley Le Mans racer from 1930, but I will say that I couldn't believe it was LEGO from the thumbnail on Flickr.  All that dark green!   He built it like the real car, from the chassis up.  He's got some nice custom stickers on there, and chrome where appropriate.  There's even a rubber tarp over the back seat.  Sir Henry Birkin must have had a blast!

The Year of the Pig

Builder Kingmarshy is getting a little ahead of himself since it's still Year of the Dog, but this entry for the Bio-Cup contest looks like a winner to me!  I'm normally not a Bionicle fan, but this gluttonous creature, Zhu Bajie the Pig, and the fancy spread he's enjoying has a great blend of system parts, really bringing him to life.  And even though Kingmarshy spent quite a bit of time on this awesome creation, he was actually ready to build something else in a half an hour.

If He Only Had a Heart...

It's tough being a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist superhero sometimes, and people don't necessarily understand your point of view.  But Pepper Potts certainly did.  In the first couple of Ironman movies, at least.  That's why she came up with this novel gift idea for Tony;  his first-gen arc reactor, on display for all to see.  Didier Burtin has faithfully recreated the advanced piece of technology and heartwarming memento in LEGO form.  Nice!

Spider-Man vs. Doctor Octopus

Looks like Doc Ock has a serious beef with the Daily Bugle's editorial board-Yikes!  My old pal Thorsten Bonsch has shifted gears from his Batcave series to the Marvel Universe.  There's lots to appreciate in this action packed scene; from the lettering in the floor to the curved city-scape mural on the back.  And even though things look dire for our web-slinging hero, I'm sure Spidey will ultimately save the day.  Just hopefully before the evening deadline...

National Mall Project

National Mall Project

I would say that most of us in the LEGO community, at one time or another, have experienced the overwhelming compulsion to build something; from spaceships, to castles, to superhero figures, and of course, spaceships.  Or, if you're like WTyler, the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  Since his retirement from the video game industry several years ago, he's occupied his new-found free time with LEGO.  Crossword puzzles and golf just weren't doing it for him.

Amagar Resource Center

Okay, so this is a real place.  Near Copenhagen, Denmark, there's a gigantic incinerator building, and on the roof there's an artificial ski slope that can be used year round.  Wow!  So, Lasse Vestergard, continuing with his endeavor to recreate the architectural designs of the Bjarke Ingels Group, has faithfully constructed it in LEGO form.  Cool!  Hot?  Well, you get what I mean...

Dagobah Diorama

"I'd like to keep it on manual control for a while."  Well, Luke, looks like you should have let Artoo land.  You'll NEVER get it out of that swamp...  Anyway, Jon and Catherine Stead have recreated that infamous splashdown on Master Yoda's home planet of Dagobah.  The camp, Yoda's abode, and even that scary scene with Darth Vader: it's all there.   Awesome!

Holy Fruit-of-the-Loom, Batman!

My old pal Thorsten Bonsch has kicked off a new series of Gothic Batman scenes with this rendition of Bruce and Dick's tony changing area in the Batcave.  Note the highly ornate cabinets for their costumes, and even a candelabra on the table.  All this surrounded by the rugged stalactites and stalagmites of the mysterious underground lair.  And there's Robin, in his tighty-whities...  What a scene!

AuraSpace

"Aura to mission control:  This is Captain ZCerberus.  Orders received, and coordinates plotted and laid in.  Time to roll the hard six..."

"Good hunting, Captain. Control out."

Or something to that effect.  That's what I figure builder ZCerberus might say aloud when getting ready to swoosh this baby around his living room.  And a few blaster noises, naturally.  Anyway, zoom in to see all of the details; from color blocking to greebles.  Lots to enjoy!

Texaco Tanker

Based on the 1930's Dodge Airflow, builder red 2 has masterfully recreated this classic tanker truck.  It features opening doors, rear and side hatches, hood, and glove box.  It's even got a tilting seat, which would come in pretty handy when the driver needed to take a snooze between deliveries, I suppose.  That was before GPS tracking.

Battlestar VANDEMONS

What would Christmas be without a new Battlestar in the fleet?  Well, that's what my old pal Garry King pondered about eight months ago when he started this 8 foot, 35K+ piece project.  Yeah, you read that right.  This SHIP is his own design, but those of you familiar with the reimagined BSG series will notice some cues from the Valkyrie-type battlestars, especially in the flight pods.  In other shots, however, you can see some Pegasus features, and of course, the Galactica.  Overall, it's another tremendous achievement by Garry, with tons of edited pictures on MocPages, so check it out!

Suburban Tram

I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking at when I spied Vince Toulouse's latest creation.   Yeah, clearly it's a high-tech tram.  But with a front-loader washing machine on the third level?  Or is it a Minion?  Whatever, it's pretty frakin' cool!  Check out Vince's photostream to see all the nifty details, especially his notations on the various Duplo and Fabuland pieces that when into this build.  Slick!

Jernsteinn on Sølvheim

Winter is coming!  But that's a different story...  Wochenender is setting the stage here with what's looking to be an epic tale of adventure.  It's about the colonization of an island north of the Highlands called Sølvheim.  The builder will be showing the growth of the colony, with this scene depicting the first footholds necessary to advance the mission.  As you look around, you'll notice a sturdy dock, tents for shelter, a few draft animals, and a lookout tower.  And I bet that cave is going to come in handy for storage.  Or protection if the Wildlings show up...

Tableau Beach

I'd bet just about all of us in the AFOL community, at some point, have heard someone say that we "still play with LEGOs."  Okay, fine, I build spaceships, yes.  And occasionally swoosh them around the house.  It may be a 120 studs long with over 12K pieces, but it's still a spaceship.

Now, Didier Burtin has created a modern artistic piece that may silence those snarky comments.  A wall mounted, wood backed, studs up rendering of an ocean view.  Using only lines of color, it's very effective, and looks quite impressive as a center piece over what appears to be a living room console.  So stunning, in fact, you may not have noticed his Saturn V Rocket over there on the left.  Zoom!

Iron Falcon

You can almost hear AC/DC playing the Star Wars theme when you see this latest creation by Zane Houston.  Apparently there's a Millennium Falcon contest on TBB, and it's generating all sorts of cool stuff.  But what I like about this in particular, besides the clever mash up, is how well it reflects the styles of both genres.  As if Tony were Corellian or something.  Would that make Pepper a Princess?
