MF-10 Diamond Empress

I’ll be the first to admit that there isn’t much LEGO mech coverage on this blog. This isn’t because I have anything against them, it’s simply because I’ve run out of words for them. I see them all the time and think “hey, that’s pretty awesome” but beyond saying “hey, this is pretty awesome” I have no idea what to write. So when I scrolled past this mostly transparent mech by builder Moko that was the usual response, but it’s just so unusual and nifty I had to share. RexZilla

I can totally relate to RexZilla by Si-MOCs here. There are days you really wish you could just stomp through a few buildings right? Well, I’d make sure they were abandoned first, I don’t want anyone hurt. And of course you need to make sure the owner would be cool with it, like they have good insurance or it was planned for demolition anyway. And of course you need to make sure there’s no noise or other prohibitive ordinances, just to be on the up and up. Actually, maybe I’m not cut out to be a large mechanical monster…

Mecha Coelacanth

It’s just a logical extrapolation, the coelacanth has been around for millions of years, it seems inevitable that it will be around in the distant future, and prowling the sea bottom in mecha form. And honestly, I don’t know what’s more terrifying, the present (and ancient) version, or the mechanical version depicted here by builder ToyForce 120.

Schwere Kanone

Builder Benjamin Cheh has gone fully beefy on this latest mech build. Meet the AGM Type 88mm "Schwere Kanone" Gustav, a seriously heavy mech. With two giant cannons, and positively bristling with armament, this dude mean business. Wherever these are deployed you can expect instant pacification, or some serious fireworks.

Dinosaur Mecha

Let's face it, dinosaurs are cool and fascinating, but also big and terrifying. I don't think we'd be at the top of the food chain had they not been wiped out. But we can sorta bring them back, in mechanical form, and they'd be just as big and scary. Like this brilliant robotic beast by nobu_tary, all pistons and servos, all stompy and bitey. Just hopefully completely under control, or it's back to hiding in holes for us.

Bustin' Ghosts, Mecha Style

I can't help but think the movie Ghostbusters would have been entirely different if the boys in gray were equipped with these babies. Builder chubbybots imagines Ghostbusting via mech, and the results are captivating. This is Ecto 4, 5 and 6, each equipped we assume with an unlicensed nuclear accelerator. Staypuft wouldn't have stood a chance against these.

Mecha Dragonite

This awesome figure by builder chubbybots is the result of mashing up two Pokemon and drawing inspiration from there. It takes a a little imagination to see Dragonite and Charizard X in this mech, but the influence is definitely there. The results are something totally new, and pretty spiffy if you ask me.

Pahlawan

Builder Benjamin Cheh certainly knows how to craft a mech, just look at this thing. Can you imagine spotting this thing coming over the rise on a battlefield? I'm pretty sure I'd soil my jumpsuit. I'd also like to point out that it's mostly black, therefore very difficult to photograph, but these images (and a few more after the jump) turned out awesome.

According to the description this is the first MOC from builder brickmon, and if that's the case I can't wait too see what the future has in store because this thing's badass. Not only does it have excellent pose-ability, a sweet color scheme and cool design, it's got a functioning cockpit with a minifig in it, awesome!

Proto-Leo

Late last night my cat Crash went sorta bonkers, like he does. One minute he's resting quietly on my chest, purring softly. Then suddenly he's off, there's a clatter in the bathroom, meow, a mad dash to the closet, meow, streaks across the room to the cat condo, meow, back to the bed, meow. Now normally I'm just thinking "what the hell is wrong with you cat?" But I think next time I'll imagine he's pretending he's this fabulous mech by builder Moko, battling some unseen enemy. That way we're both entertained.

Crystalon

Mecha is an extremely popular building theme, so much so that it gets a little tiresome to be honest. It takes a model of significance to even get my attention there's so much of it, and even when something does catch my eye, finding something to say about it can be a chore. It takes something unique to really get me excited, and unique this is. This mech by Moko is almost entirely made of transparent parts, and to great effect. It's not see-through for the sake of it, it's got style and panache. I don't know what practical use this would have in battle, but it sure is beautiful to look at.

MSM-04G Juagg

One thing I've learned over the years of blogging cool Gundam models is I don't know much about Gundam. For instance, I had no idea this guy existed. But thanks to the mad building skills of Moko, I've been enlightened. This is an amphibious unit, with rocket launchers for fingers and particle cannons in his chest. 

Macross Destroid Tomahawk

I consider it a privilege to witness someone emerging from their dark ages, to watch them explore this hobby again and join the ranks of AFOLs. Like me, builder prolost is a veteran of visual effects in motion pictures. We even worked on some of the same movies as the studios we worked for were sorta "sister companies", of similar size and capacity. So to be able to watch his "awakening" has special meaning to me. And from the looks of this clean and well-built Tomahawk, we can look forward to some amazing work from a talented artist and great guy. Welcome to the fold, brother.

Blue Gale Xabungle

Builder Moko has gone a bit retro with this latest mech. This is Blue Gale Xabungle from Combat Mecha Xabungle, an animated series from way back in 1982. I say way back because this is also the year I started high school (jeez I'm old). I like the bright colors and clean lines on this one. From the thumbnail you'd swear it's just a high quality toy. But no, it's a high quality toy built from another high quality toy.

Orion (And His Belt)

Marco De Bon recently put out this fantastically slick mecha figure, Orion. I would think it would be difficult to make so many colors in one model aesthetically pleasing, but this build effortlessly balances them all, making it very appealing to the eye.

This Icarus Can Fly...

...Unlike the mythological one, which crashed and burned. This sweet mecha by Devid VII definitely isn't susceptible to the problems Icarus Mk.1 had. It looks awesome, with the dark red color scheme and all those menacing angles. I particularly like the design of the missile pods on the shoulders, as well as the turbine above the head.

Balrog

The first thing about this stunning mech by Benjamin Cheh that grabbed my attention was the pose. It's dynamic and compelling, so much so that at first I assumed it was an illustration. Then I clicked through to discover this absolutely badass and super pose-able mech. I find it difficult to judge exact scale and weight of MOCs sometimes, but judging by the beefiness of that stand, this thing is a beast.

reFX01 Type D

Builder Lu Sim continues to perfect his mech building skills modular concept with this upgrade of the A/B type Mech Wars reFrame. The idea is to establish a sound armature substructure and add components and upgrades. It makes for a continually evolving design, and some seriously cool mechs. Check out his blog for more info.
