Every LEGO April Fools Joke 2022: A Defense of Creative Foolery
/Each year the online LEGO community takes part in a quirky tradition by expressing their creativity and publishing jokes about our hobby on April Fools Day. From fake sets to wild rumors about LEGO expiration dates, LEGO fans have been trained to take everything with a grain of salt on April 1st.
While some LEGO fans are annoyed by the flood of fake news, I personally love seeing the creativity the community has to offer each and every year. It represents going the extra mile, crafting a narrative, tapping into the desires of builders, and expressing something we wish were true. It shows who is willing to go the extra mile to create their OWN story, photos and renders rather than relying on LEGO alone for set news.
Is every LEGO April Fools joke funny? Not in the slightest! Some can be quite lazy (i.e. monorail/early modulars/rare themes are making a comeback). Others are so well produced and researched that you have to look twice and hopefully remember the date while reading. The best jokes take effort while feeling effortless at the same time. They should be based on some hint of plausibility while still able to speak a truth in a funny way that might be hard to express any other way. And each year is hit or miss. Many LEGO media sites don’t even participate consistently, only running with it when they have a good idea. (You can see the comparison between last year’s April Fools results here.)
That’s why we enjoy April Fools. It is a tradition that even LEGO participates in! It brings the online LEGO community together (if only for a day) to have a festival of foolishness—just because. So in case you missed any, here is a comprehensive compilation of all 33 dubious stories about LEGO we could find for April Fools Day 2022.
