Nerdy About The Bricks
Pate Keetongu is back with another dwarf to add to his ever expanding collection from middle earth. This time it's Dáin II Ironfoot and his pig mount. It's been a joy to watch all these characters take shape, each one better than the last, and now this one has this magnificent armored pig, fantastic.
The battle raged on as Skippy and Burt made their way to the top of the wall, bows in hand. Their only task, defend the drain under the wall. Before them was an imposing sight, thousands of bloodthirsty orcs, hellbent on their destruction. As they settled into position, Skippy spotted a particular orc in the throng.
SKIPPY
Hey, what's that really big orc doing?
BURT
He's running toward us with a huge sparkler! Bit late to be celebrating New Year! What a buffoon!
SKIPPY
Where is he going? Doesn't he know we're all done with that holiday? I'm already writing the wrong date on my checks.
BURT
Yup, day late and a dollar short eh mate? Looks like he's heading into the drain down there.
Kaboom.
When seeking wisdom, dwarves sometimes visit the statues of their elders. When I'm seeking wisdom, I visit Wikipedia. One of these seems more noble than the other. Builder Legonardo Davidy has taken stone beards to the next level with this MOC. Just look at that sculpting!
When I first looked at the parts selection for LEGO Star Wars 10236 Ewok Village I thought "you could build a pretty big tree with this". But when builder JK Brickworks saw the selection he thought he could build a pretty big Ent with it, and did just that. This is an alternate model for the set, and it's pretty impressive. The face is a little goofy for my taste, but overall it's pretty awesome. There's also a video, LDD model and instructions on his website, check it out!
Did you know there's another Iron Builder going on? Yes, it's been a bit of a low key one, what with all the distractions in the world, but Pepa Quin and Disco86 are currently locked in an epic struggle of LEGO builder superiority. The part this round is the 2x2 inverted dome/bowl.
This micro scale Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings is beautiful. I always marvel at the ability of skilled builders like lisqr to imply more detail than is actually there, and to find more detail in otherwise fairly plain bricks. Like the use of the grill tiles on their sides to make tiny windows, brilliant.
While I've always thought that the name oliphaunt was just silly, these four-tusked behemoths were quite impressive in Lord Of The Rings. And this mini fig scale version by Simply Complex is every bit as impressive, and huge. This was built for the Middle Earth LEGO Olympics over on MOCpages, and will be certainly turn some heads.
I'm a fan of Lord Of The Rings. And while many fans took some offense or were at least disappointed when Tom Bombadil didn't make the cut in Peter Jackson's epic trilogy I have to admit I didn't care. It's always struck me as sort of superfluous and odd part of the book. But perhaps if I had seen this charming MOC by Sergeant Chipmunk I would have had a clearer picture in my head. Then again, there's those songs...
Don't you just hate it when an all-powerful supernatural being tries to take over the world? Meet Sauron, from Middle Earth. He's the tall, dark and ambitious type, with big plans for Mordor and whatever else realms he might just, you know, take by force with an orc army. This version by Legonardo Davidy doesn't pose much threat though, you could just pop that one ring off and poof, he's back in the parts bin.
These orcs know how to party! This is the wooden fortress of the orcs of northern Middle Earth, Gruzak Gur according to builder Disco86. I like to imagine they're celebrating 2014 just like the rest of us, but with with orc style (and maybe some man flesh, they are orcs after all).
Members of the STUDS booth at DesignerCon took some time this afternoon to speed build the Tower of Orthanc, an event sponsored by FBTB. They made quick work of this set with a time of 36 minutes and 56 seconds. You can spot OneLUG's amazing Orthanc tower in the background of some shots.
One of the greatest accomplishments of The Hobbit (and Lord of the Rings for that matter) is the production design. Especially the armor and weapons. The elvish weapons are just gorgeous. And this MOC by Cole Edmonson of Thorin's blade captures the elegant lines and distinct design so well.
This is a awesome mashup, Lord of the Rings meets Space meets Vic Viper. It's Novvember so VVs are showing up all over the place. But this one is so damn clever. I totally want to see more of these, c'mon everybody, licensed VV FTW!
It's been a bit of a LOTR week for me, I even watched Fellowship of the Ring (well, the first half of the extended edition) yesterday. So the lovely village of Hobbiton is fresh in my mind. And this MOC by TheBrickAvenger would fit in perfectly. I really like the stonework on this, and that roof is perfect.
You may have thunk it impossible, but there is something more terrifying than a fourteen foot spider, a fourteen foot mechanical spider. Luckily Sam's packing heat, so everything should work out ok. This alternate non-reality mashup brought to you by the tears of children, and crises_crs.
A second phenomenal Tolkien build in one week? Infomaniac brings us this, the great hall of Meduseld, in the capitol city of Edoras, in the land of Rohan. Here King Theoden went all bonkers and stuff, thanks to Wormtongue and Saruman, the jerks.
Theme parks are another of my passion (well, Disneyland and LEGOLAND at least) and this huge MOC from OliveSeon looks like one you'd have a hard time getting me out of. Three lands are represented here, Star Wars, LOTR and Marvel, and each land is packed with detail. I'm hoping more images come soon because I want to get a closer look. For now click through and scroll around the largest size, there's lots going on.
When the official Council of Elrond set was announced this is what I pictured, then I saw what it really was and, well...meh. This is gorgeous though. The second you look at it you can almost hear the Rivendell music playing. The most delightful detail is Sam, Merry and Pippin all watching from the outside.
