Battle Of Hoth

The moment I looked at this excellent little Empire Strikes Back vignette by builder GolPlaysWithLego John Williams' phenomenal score started playing in my head. Then the scene played out in my imagination, and I was 12 again. This is part of the magic of LEGO and Star Wars, they just go together like peanut butter and toast (which is what I was eating when I wrote this, I'm a man-child).

The snowspeeder is one of my favorite Star Wars ships. It's angular design and no-nonsense style always appealed to me. There's been many attempts to build it this small (just look at all the Star Wars advent calendars) but I think this one by Rogue Bantha is the most successful I've seen. Built for the Star Wars building contest on Brickset.

This is a compact snowspeeder done by Kit Bricksto, and it's not because an AT-AT stepped on it. The Rebel Alliance's snowspeeders have always been a popular vehicle for AFOL's to recreate in LEGO form to the best of their ability. However, I think this model stands out due to the size. To me, it seems very proportionate to a minifigure's size. Though these speeders do fit two rebels, it's not a very large ship like many LEGO models make it out to be. Each angle of the ship was still done in excellent ways, which is a bonus considering the size.

Nathaniel Stoner

     My name is Nathaniel Stoner, and I am an very active LEGO builder.  I mostly build in the themes of castle and science-fiction, but I also dabble in other genres and create occasional random MOC's (My Own Creations). 

     When I was younger, I would get and build small LEGO sets for my birthday, but I was never really into them.  When they fell apart, I would become frustrated attempting to put them back together and would throw them in a box in my closet.  I couldn't stand them!

     Then, miraculously, I became addicted to the LEGO brick later in my teen years.  Ever since, I have continued to build up (pun intended) my collection of bricks and to expand my knowledge of techniques and building skills.  LEGO is truly more than a toy, its an art form and a way to express yourself.

     For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever. 

     My hope is to inspire other young (and perhaps even older) LEGO builders to unleash their inner creativity!  You can find me on my Flikr here.

We sort of take it for granted now, but the battle of Hoth is one of the most imaginative an exciting battles ever put on celluloid. The music, the vehicle design, the action, it's all just amazing. I can vividly remember sitting in a theater, mouth agape as this scene unfolded, it was just awesome. Builder GolPlaysWithLego brilliantly pays homage to this greatest of battles with one of the coolest AT-ATs I've seen at this scale. Those nano scale snowspeeders are pretty nifty too.

Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back is widely regarded as the best of all the Star Wars films. My personal favorite is A New Hope, (gotta love the original) but I love Empire too. This diorama from markus19840420 looks like a movie set, in fact it's got my juices going for some Hoth stop-motion action. Too bad I'm away from the studio this month.
