The Tale of the Three Brothers

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a compilation of children's stories from the wizarding world of Harry Potter. One of the most recognized stories in this book is the Tale of the Three Brothers. Aaron Newman has created this awesome representation of the three brothers meeting the incarnation of death itself, as told in the story (and read by Hermione in the films). This is the second recreation of this scene, the first being made in vignette form for the Harry's Magical Journey Project back in 2017. The image of death's looming presence in this scene really attracted me to the build, despite how scary its appearance is in this form. I really appreciate how this scene came together, with some excellent photography and positioning.

     For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever.

A Place to Get All You Need

Portuguese builder Cesbrick is back presenting another fantastic scene for us! A general store is something I always enjoy seeing recreated in LEGO form in different scales. Every time, I see brand new techniques for creating that rustic and vintage appearance one would expect from one of these stops on an old road. This model is, of course, no exception. Not only does it feature an awesome car, but the detailing is out of this world (an interesting word choice, I know, considering the classic vibe this scene gives off). Make sure to take a closer look, because I am still noticing little techniques included!

Impressive Even When Tiny

Dwalin Forkbeard unveils a rather well designed microscale castle and accompanying landscape creation. What instantly caught my attention was the excellent execution of the castle's curved walls, and the main gateway. It's also really nice to see the inclusion of the different buildings that would house important figures, considering the small scale.

Technique Tuesday - Weaved Branches

One of the best things about the LEGO community is that we can learn from one another.  Here at BrickNerd, we like to share techniques that we see from builders all around the world. . .

Full Plate has experimented with many unique tree designs. This month, he's adding to his growing collection of recent landscape projects. These snow covered tress (though the white leaves could be replaced with another color if you wish), are incorporating a "weaving" technique with some the individual leaf elements being held in by friction. The end result is a very realistic tree appearance which, according to the builder, is fairly solid and can even be held upside down. Very impressive!

Vibrant Rover

TFDesigns has been rolling out some very interesting rover designs this month, including the one you see just below. This rover, for whatever reason, seems very playful to me (and certainly friendly). I think it's the choice of the bright colors that seem to call: "Come closer! I won't roll over you." This model also shows us that you don't need any truly specialty parts to make a solid rover, you just need a bit of creativity! Well done indeed!

The Violet Vanquisher

When it comes to building starfighters these days, the stranger the better, as demonstrated here by dark-purple fan Chris Perron. Thanks to LEGO's Nexo Knights series, we have had several new curved elements introduced to the ever growing collection of our favorite plastic pieces. Several newer parts are used throughout this spacecraft, for example the dark purple curved panel elements that work miraculously well as...well...panels on this ship's body. Another great and unique starfighter to showcase here on BrickNerd, and I can't wait to see some more designs from Chris in the future!

The Sword: The Tool of a Knight

Brick Ninja forged his weapon not from hard steel, but from plastic building bricks! I think life size, brick-built swords are some of the coolest replicas built in LEGO form, and this blade is no exception. With a long blade, a "leathery" grip, and excellent shaping for the pommel, this awesome sword looks ready to battle any medieval invader.

For Sparta

Talk about nearly impenetrable armor. Roughly 50 minifig shield accessories were put together in this vignette by Vitreolum to create this effective protection method used by Spartans. I had to show off this build because not only is it very creative, but I also am a big fan of this time in history. With those 50 shields positioned, I think it is quite a bit cramped inside of there! And probably rather smelly, too. . .

A Powerful Medieval Vignette

The ~Maestro brings us this medieval vignette depicting feudalism in medieval Europe. For those unaware, feudalism combined customs in both military and legal matters hundreds of years ago between the 9th and 15th centuries. Hey, look at that! You looked at a cool LEGO creation, and learned a bit of history! That is one thing I appreciate about some LEGO creations that depict historical events: you learn more in a fun way! I think I'll wrap up this post, though, because those guys on the bottom are no doubt getting rather tired (not that the lord cares).

Technique Tuesday - Clipped Stonework

One of the best things about the LEGO community is that we can learn from one another.  Here at BrickNerd, we like to share techniques that we see from builders all around the world. . .

Are you feeling a little more advanced today? Good! We've covered some more basic stonework techniques before, but we're taking things up a notch with this design by Marcel V. If you have a lot of bar elements and modified studs with a hole to spare, this is the design for you! One beneficial aspect of this technique is that it really provides you with the ability to angle the stones to make them crooked and even protruding from the wall. Very intricate, and looks fantastic when completed!

The HMS Royal Oak

There are never enough LEGO tall ships out there, and fortunately Ayrlego has added another to the collection out there on the web. The Royal Oak has some excellent colored layers in the hull, which instantly caught my attention. Building ships like this is no easy task, which is why I have respect for those builders who have produced incredible designs. Hoist the sails, gentlemen!

A Very White Christmas

Christmas Eve is here! It's a time to celebrate with family and friends, but also a time to create some festive creations for the season. BrickinNick made a unique (special snowflake!) snowflake to display in his home, and one of the most creative designs that I have ever seen. It's hard to picture the exact size, but maybe this could even work as a tree topper, or an ornament. A good snowflake model is something I always enjoy seeing in LEGO. Great work here, Nick!

A Wreath for Your Home

Builders like AC Pin are taking advantage of the holiday season to produce some festive and creative models for followers to enjoy. This wreath caught my attention, because I was so curious to see how all these 1x2 curve elements were connected to create this awesome wreath design. Turns out, they are ironically connected to leaf elements! A really nice model that brings further Christmas cheer to the LEGO community!

Let's Do Some Grillin'

David Zambito provides us with an excellent example of a vignette. Small build, but packed with techniques that make a large difference. In this scene, a man is grilling his dinner (an activity I'm sure some of us wish we could be doing right now). What drew me to this little build is that grill, which is an excellent design (see separate picture below). So simple, but so effective, and one of the best I've seen. The builder also didn't settle for a simple tile patio, instead he chose to use slopes and tiles to create some great stonework, a rather popular technique. It's the little things that can turn a small build into one that leaves a big impression!

You can never have too many LEGO lightsaber models, and Takamichi Irie is adding another to the growing collection that we've featured here on BrickNerd. As Obi-Wan himself has said, it's an "elegant weapon, for a more civilized age." No Jedi is complete without his iconic weapon, and I'm sure Luke Skywalker himself would be proud of this model.

Nathaniel Stoner

     My name is Nathaniel Stoner, and I am an very active LEGO builder.  I mostly build in the themes of castle and science-fiction, but I also dabble in other genres and create occasional random MOC's (My Own Creations). 

     When I was younger, I would get and build small LEGO sets for my birthday, but I was never really into them.  When they fell apart, I would become frustrated attempting to put them back together and would throw them in a box in my closet.  I couldn't stand them!

     Then, miraculously, I became addicted to the LEGO brick later in my teen years.  Ever since, I have continued to build up (pun intended) my collection of bricks and to expand my knowledge of techniques and building skills.  LEGO is truly more than a toy, its an art form and a way to express yourself.

     For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever. 

     My hope is to inspire other young (and perhaps even older) LEGO builders to unleash their inner creativity!  You can find me on my Flikr here. 

Kadavo Escape

With a new addition to his Ring Worlds collection, Inthert is back with an incredible model for his ongoing collection of Star Wars scenes. This particular scenario was shown in The Clone Wars TV series (RIP), where a Republic light cruiser flies underneath a Zygerrian slave facility in order to rescue the captives. This arc of episodes on the show was very interesting, and this model is just outstanding. Not only is the base provided with excellent detailing and an almost sinister appearance, but the cruiser is one of the most accurate ones I have seen. Simply excellent work. Inthert's ring worlds always make me geek out for a few minutes...

The BrickFormers Contest

The Throbbing In Your Head

Sheo. has produced numerous creations with an interesting style to them. To me, they're examples of LEGO modern art pieces. This model, simply captioned "Headache," is quite interesting to think about after knowing the name of the creation. Perhaps this is really what's going on when our heads begin to hurt? A very interesting MOC to display, for sure!

F15 Eagle Comin' In...

According to builder Kai NRG/Geneva, his own grandfather helped develop the F15 Eagle. There can't be a more appropriate reason to take on building a model of this fighter jet, and I think Kai produced a magnificent model that I'd love to hang from my ceiling! The subtle angle of the wings, the excellent cockpit area (which is not easy at this scale, I might add), and the inclusion of some interesting choice in elements combine together to create this creation. I see no reason why Kai's grandfather could not be proud of this design.
