Going on an Adventure with Only 101 LEGO Bricks

It’s been almost two weeks since our first RogueOlympics Recap, and since then two more rounds went down, seeing almost 60 entries combined—and another round is going on right now. It is time to take a look at what can be done with a mere 101 LEGO bricks—are you ready to count?

The prompt for Round 2 was ”Adventure” and it sent the participants far and wide. While some paid homage to Johnny Thunder and his friends in various locations all over the globe, others took trips down memory lane and reveled in childhood memories. There were soapbox races and adventure playgrounds, and research missions to alien planets and video game weapons. In short, another creative smorgasbord full of builds that totally deserve a second glance!

A crowd-favorite was Dan Ko’s (Flickr/Instagram) tale of Fifi the Warrior Princess who we can see hunting Tatsu, the great sand green whale. Totally original, this creation was simply oozing with both character and atmosphere, and while some of that is naturally due to that gorgeous backdrop, the build can totally stand on its own—on a trans-clear stand, that is, which naturally also fit within the element limit. There’s something fun seeing surfboards used as giant fins (from the recent LEGO Flower Bouquet set) or big teeth reimagined as tails, and I for one just really want to see more of this! 

For a completely different take, Martin Gebert (Flickr/Instagram) created a brick-built metaphor for parenthood, uniquely personal and at the same time incredibly relatable. One of the few digital entries received, this MOC manages to tell a whole story with very little, using perfectly fitting facial expressions on the characters and on-point posing to evoke emotion and action. Sausages and balloon segments form a ramshackle boat, and the stork makes ingenious use of Friends spatulas for its feet, and who knew a crowbar would make for a splendid beak?

If you’re a fan of fairytales and microscale adventures, Mark van der Maarel (Flickr/Instagram) is happy to take you on a ride. Soaring above the clouds, a yellow hot air balloon is aiming for a castle in the distance, complete with a little golden stagecoach. A forest made from the fairly new plant stems frames the scene, with Unikitty cloud plates creating a cartoony backdrop. It is a lovely scene, enhanced with a deliberately soft focus!

Who better to send on an adventure than this lovable pair of friends? Seeing the category title pop up, I was immediately hoping for BrickNerd’s very own Simon Liu (Flickr/Instagram) to pay homage to Calvin & Hobbes. Simon being Simon, of course, knocked it out of the park and created a loving tribute to the two intrepid explorers that Bill Watterson sent on so many adventures. There is so much life in these two faceless characters that are made from barely a handful of bricks, yet equipped with everything one might need: a toboggan, a treasure map, and even an explorer flag—ready to do what they do best: Go exploring!
